Basic Description/Course Objective/ Prerequisite(s):
Overview: This is an issues-based course for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the work of local nonprofit organizations and current issues facing Japanese society. We will use online readings to better understand local issues, causes and the approach of Japanese nonprofit NGOs. Each week, participants are asked to do readings on issues and research organizations working on specific issues to better understand the methods they use. Participants are expected to be active in class discussion, group-work and activities involving classmates. Each person is required to make a final presentation on one specific social issue being addressed by one organization of their own choice.

Basic Course Overview:
This is a skills-based course focusing on the approaches and strategies used by nonprofit NGOs to deal with a wide range of issues. After an introduction to the development and state of nonprofit NGOs, we focus on: service provision, education and information dissemination, research, training and empowerment, community organizing, advocacy and economic justice. Reading assignments introduce basic skills, techniques, and issues. Case studies and research on NGOs help participants understand the diverse methods for dealing with complex issues.This class is run in a workshop format including presentation, discussion and role-play activities. Participants are expected to be active in class discussion group work and complete a class project. Anyone interested in broadening their nonprofit organizational skills and learning specifically about what nonprofit NGOs do is encouraged to join this course.
