This presentation will discuss the findings of a research project on green buildings in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area and outline the presenter’s achievements during his period as a postdoctoral fellow at UNU-IAS.
The lifecycle of a building usually results in significant amounts of energy and resource consumption as well as substantial environmental footprints. The concept of green buildings, which is based on the application of sustainability principles to building design, construction and management, is a recent response to address these problems. However, it is not very straightforward to promote the construction of green buildings due to various challenges, some of which are context dependent. In this presentation, based on the findings of a case study in Tokyo and Yokohama, the most common green technologies and measures used in green buildings as well as environmental benefits that green buildings deliver will be discussed. In addition, the talk will also touch upon the opportunities and barriers to promote the construction of green buildings in Japanese cities.
