Responsibilities:
The Head of the Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa (OUIK) will hold the rank of Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow. She/he will be expected to be fully involved in the management and academic activities of UNU-IAS/OUIK in the area of environmental governance with a focus on biodiversity, including daily management activities, research, supervision of research and teaching. The incumbent is expected to spend a substantial amount of time in carrying out research and supervision and mentoring of research fellows and postdoctoral and doctoral fellows, as well as interacting with local academic and political stakeholders. The Head of UNU-IAS/OUIK will be involved in other academic and advisory functions and fundraising efforts of the Unit and the Institute. The Head of UNU-IAS/OUIK will report directly to the Director of UNU-IAS.

Duration of contract:
This is a full time employment on a one (1) year Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) with the United Nations University, with the possibility of renewal subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
¡¦Ph.D. degree, preferably in the areas of social/environmental sciences or international environmental law/international relations, though doctoral graduates from the natural sciences who have worked with policy-oriented research are also encouraged to apply;
¡¦At least 6 years of research experience after the completion of the Ph.D. is required to be considered as a Research Fellow. At least 10 years of research experience after the completion of the Ph.D. is required to be considered as a Senior Research Fellow;
¡¦Demonstrated research experience in the area of biodiversity, environmental change, international agreements or regimes, particularly their relations with local communities and their environment and development issues;
¡¦A sound record of academic publications and academic service experience;
¡¦Management experience, research management skills, research supervision experience are required, and teaching experience is desirable;
¡¦Ability to prepare funding proposals and write reports to donors;
¡¦Fluency in English and Japanese is required;
¡¦Good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multi cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Starting date: It is expected that the appointee will take up the position by April 2012, subject to negotiation.
