The Durban climate conference postponed all significant climate action beyond 2020, by when it may be too late to limit climate change by making global emissions peak. The world seems on course to catastrophic warming of 4 degrees Celsius, well above the tolerable threshold of 1.5 to 2 degrees. The conference outcome further weakens the commitments and disciplines pledged in the past. The extension of the Kyoto Protocol beyond 2012 and creation of the Green Climate Fund's empty shell do not compensate for the setback to the cause of a fair, ambitious and binding climate deal.
