Responsibilities:
The Institute¡Çs Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa (OUIK) is recruiting a Project Assistant for its Cities and Biodiversity research unit.
Under the general supervision of the UNU-IAS Director, and the direct supervision of the Programme Head of UNU-IAS OUIK, the Project
Assistant shall:
¡¦Provide clerical support to the Leader of CAB research activities;
¡¦Execute literature review to clarify current bio-cultural diversity study and relationship between urban and rural areas and summarize them;
¡¦Assist in organization and follow-up of conferences, workshops, seminars and other events under the CAB research activities, including logistic and administrative aspects;
¡¦Facilitate communication among partners and networks of the CAB research activities;
¡¦Conduct other activities based on specific requests.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
¡¦A university degree, in a field related to Environmental Social Science, Sustainable Development, or Policy Studies;
¡¦At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a related area;
¡¦Knowledge and experience of working with coordination and organization of conferences, logistical and financial arrangements, and ideally sustainable development related issues.
¡¦Knowledge of both sociology and ecology is a definite advantage;
¡¦Good computer and organizational skills;
¡¦Excellent communication skills with proficiency in both oral and written English and Japanese. Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
¡¦Excellent analytical skills as well as demonstrated ability to multi-task and to manage own workload and schedule to deliver timely results;
¡¦A good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Duration of Contract:
The successful candidate shall work under the Consultant Contract (CTC) with UNU-IAS until 31 March 2014. The possibility for renewal is subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance. However, no consultant shall provide services for more than twenty-four (24) months in a thirty-six (36) ¡¾month period. The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil servant status nor be a ¡Èstaff member¡É as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. UNU does not sponsor a working visa for this position. Applications from suitably qualified women candidates are particularly encouraged.¡¡
